Re-Authenticating An Office 365 / Microsoft 365 Account

Modified on Wed, 21 May at 2:33 PM

Background

There are a couple of reasons that you may want to 're-authenticate' a Microsoft 365/Office 365 account:

  1. The 'lease' or 'grant' has expired
  2. You want to use different credentials

1. Invalid Lease or Grant (or Secret Expired)

When OAuth is used to allow a user to authenticate the P11D Organiser against their account, they are issued a 'lease' or 'permission grant' - this has an life as defined in the Microsoft 365 admin area. This is usually 6 months, but can be set at 3 or less. When these lease expires, the P11D Organiser will try to push the user through a re-authentication process automatically, but this doesn't always work and manual intervention is needed. The error message would appear similar to the one below:

2. Change of Credentials

In this instance, a set of credentials have been used to obtain the OAuth permission to email, but these have changed are been updated. As explained above, there is a lease granted in this circumstance, and it would need to be 'refreshed' to capture the new credentials.

Method/Resolution

To correct this, from the email set up screen, simply RIGHT CLICK the 'Sign in with Microsoft' button in the lower left (see below), which will then take you through the re-authentication process.
